The 2011 JayCW Golf Tournament

The 2011 Golf Tournament was held Sunday, May 29 at Rome Country Club. Golf Committee Chair and tournament organizer Jerry Closinski also provided this recap of the day's action.

JAYCW 2011
The Third Annual JayCW Golf Tournament turned in the best scoring we have seen in the three-year history of the event.
The team of Dave Fay, Eric Maya, Tom Peters Jr., and Mark Lloyd were just too tough in the end firing a 17 under par 55. In the 20 years of playing golf at Rome Country Club, I have never seen a scramble team shoot better than 15 under, so this was some outstanding play. With Dave hitting from the gold tees, they were just too tough for the rest of us. Congrats to Dave, Eric, Mark, and Tom.
DJ Guggi's team, and defending champs consisting of DJ, Ian Campbell, Paul Roefaro, and Dave Guggi, were five shots off the pace, at 12 under 60 but the defending champs could not muster enough magic to claim their second JayCW crown. Although they did do their share of talking before the event.
Team NYE (event sponsor), consisting of Jeff Gifford, Richie Artigiani, Craig Beach, and Ron Artigiani, came in third with some good play on the rain-soaked Rome Country Club.

Women's closest to the pin was won by Ting. Ting is one of those athletes that go by first name only, more so in this case because no one knows how to spell her last name. 13 letters total with three vowels. Your guess is as good as mine.
The women's long drive was won by Lauren Cupp. Lauren won the Rome City Women's Amateur, the Syracuse Post-Standard, and was in the Top 10 in the NYS Women's Amateur hosted by the Rome Country Club. She is one of the area's top women's amateurs.
The men's long drive was won by Jim Sutton. Ian Campbell was heard saying in the clubhouse afterwards at the dinner, "DJ, how did that old guy hit it past us?" It's okay, guys, he has been playing longer than you, but you should be able to set past a 72-year-old.
Closest to the pin for the men was won by Eric Maya, of the winning team. It was said by his teammates that was the only shot of his they used all day. Good playing, Eric.
This year we had a putting contest that could have won someone $5,000. Tommy Campbell and Roger Closinski took their chances at a 50-foot putt for $5,000. Tommy just missed on the right side. This contest made the Scholarship Fund $300, so thank you to Rome Volkswagen for putting this on for us, and thank you to all sponsors as this was our best year ever.
This was our best turnout yet and we hope to do better next year. Thank you to all of the players and sponsors. We look forward to seeing you next year.

Thank you also to Debra Harlander (Images by Debra Rose of Camden, NY) for providing each golfer with an individual team photo, which she produced on-site for handout at the banquet.
